It’s 2024. Less than 25% of the musicians on stage at major US music festivals are women.

the mission

The inspiration behind Book More Women is the pervasive gender imbalance that currently plagues music festivals.

The goal is to provide a visual representation of the problem, start conversations, track progress, and work towards better representation on future festival lineups and beyond.

the methodology

Any band, group, or solo artist who is or features at least one woman or nonbinary musician as an “official” permanent member will remain on the poster. Official social media pages, press photos, and interviews are used to determine who is and is not an official member of a group.

Starting in 2024: Each individual “official” musician of an act is sorted into three groups: women, nonbinary (may include genderqueer, agender, gender fluid, and other identities), and men. Percentages posted on social media are calculated individually for each of these three categories using the total number of official musicians on the lineup. Non-musical acts or members of a group such as comedians or visual artists are not considered. Acts with no set roster such as Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo or Songs For Kids at Shaky Knees are not considered.

And always: Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Nonbinary folks are nonbinary regardless of assignment at birth.

Rolling Stone - February 6, 2023

“This visual representation of the gender disparity on lineups highlights the issue in a way that we hadn’t seen before. They are providing our industry, and the public, with a tool to reference and call out gender discrepencies with just a glance”
