mission

The inspiration behind Book More Women is the pervasive gender imbalance that currently plagues music festivals.

The goal is to provide a visual representation of the problem, start conversations, and work towards better representation on future lineups.

methodology

Any band, group, or solo artist who is or features at least one woman or nonbinary musician as an “official” permanent member will remain on the poster. Official social media pages, press photos, and interviews are used to determine who is and is not an official member of a group.

2024 and beyond: Each individual “official” musician of an act is sorted into three groups: women, nonbinary (may include genderqueer, agender, gender fluid, and other identities), and men. Percentages posted on social media are calculated individually for each of these three categories using the total number of official musicians on the lineup. Non-musical acts or members of a group such as comedians or visual artists are not considered. Acts with no set roster such as Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo or Songs For Kids at Shaky Knees are not considered.

Always: Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Nonbinary folks are nonbinary regardless of assignment at birth.

Assumptions are one of our worst enemies and considerable efforts are made to never get to the point of assuming any musicians gender identity.

2023 and earlier: Percentages posted on social media are based on the total number of musical acts booked for the festival and the total number of musical acts who meet the above criteria. Non-musical acts such as comedians or visual artists are not considered. Acts with no set roster such as Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo or Songs For Kids at Shaky Knees are not considered.

Percentages calculated in this way will be referred to as legacy data.

history

Book More Women was created March 2018, starting first on Twitter then soon moving on to Instagram. Over 375 festival lineups have been researched, edited, and posted in that time.
